Wisconsin Bison Farm Sees Third White Buffalo

09/15/2006

A southern Wisconsin buffalo farm is keeping busier handling its visitors than caring for the animals these days. Dave Heider of Janesville said one of his buffalo gave birth to a pure white calf last month--which would be the third time that has happen in Davalas Farms history.

A white buffalo is considered sacred by many Indian tribes for its potential to bring good fortune and peace. Heider's last white buffalo, a female named Miracle, died in 2004 at the age of 10. Thousands of people came to see Maracle, whose coat became darker as it aged.

Heider plans to recruit volunteers to handle the visitors he expects at his farm as curious people come to see the calf for themselves. About 50 American Indians held a drum ceremony at the farm this past weekend to honor the young buffalo. The calf has yet to be named.
